Watching this latest video from TheYoungTurks and a surprising (or not) stat Cenk spotted was that the average age of Fox resident neo-con is 71 years old. Now there's nothing wrong with being 71 years old and many of the folks that have reached that lofty age can be right on the money and are intelligent, thoughtful people. But... it does show where O'Reilly's show is aimed at: the older, more conservative demographic.
Most folks that old are more concerned about the neighborhood kids staying off their lawn than what YouTube is or what the latest trends are.
Uyger says that while zipping around the Web to see what he can do to make his own website that much better he stopped at Bill O'Reilly's website and found a poll asking his visitors about YouTube, specifically:
How do you rate YouTube's impact on American life and culture?
and the results...
Positive 31 percent
Negative 45 percent!
And extremely surprising: 24 percent responded "What's YouTube?" Yup, many of the oldsters who are following O'Reilly have no clue about YouTube or how it has positively affected the world. YouTube is just one small part of the Internet which has changed the world and the "grumpy old men" as Cenk calls them don't like it and if they were to figure it out probably still wouldn't approve of it.
Not to smash the older demographic too much, but it does show who Bill O'Reilly is trying to appeal to and as Cenk Uygur so correctly points out, we are giving O'Reilly way too much credence. Let him have those folks and the rest of us will try to catch the pulse of a younger, more tech-savvy group.
