Maker Studios Tour! Special Partners Project Behind the Scenes

Rise of the Tubers: Behind the Scenes at Maker Studios

Maker Studios in Culver City, Calif., is the closest thing the world has to a viral video factory. The upstart studio produces content solely for YouTube and racks up hundreds of millions of views in the process.

A cadre of the most successful personalities on YouTube, including ShayCarl, KassemG and Ray William Johnson, formed the collective in 2009 to pool production resources. What started in the living has moved beyond, and the company which once employed a handful of people now employs around 200.

The studio operates at a breakneck pace, producing dozens of videos every month across 300 channels that rack up 500 million views.

Maker Studios on Last Call With Carson Daly

This video looks like it was shot using a potato. Really, really bad visual quality and the sound is terrible too. It was uploaded in December 2011 around Christmas and TV personality, Carson Daly had a show back in the day and he's being shown around the offices of new media company by Lisa Nova.

Nova was once a big thing on YouTube although her presence on the platform has pretty much long since been lost as although she still has just under half a million subs, she stopped uploading to her Lisa Nova channel around 11 years ago. Sorry, one three minute sketch in 2014, but since? Nada. She apparently made a killing financially when Maker was sold to Disney and hasn't looked back.

But let's not get sidetracked - the video below is showing Maker Studios around 2010-11.

WooHoo New Office!

This video was from around June 2010 although it appears it was posted later in 2011 and is bits and pieces of clips the lovely Ceciley Jenkins took from back in 2010 when Maker Studios and crew were moving into their new (at the time) digs. They've long since moved on as Maker was eventually snatched up by Disney in 2014 (for a reported $500 million) after it grew to a massive size.

The story of Maker is a story unto itself but brevity prevents me from writing too much about here because this is a video showing some OG Maker staff exploring the building.

Quite the look back at what was and now is gone. It is nice to rekindle how positively smitten I was with the dimpled Ceciley from back in the day.

At the time she was posting regularly on the YouTube website, I'd have sworn there was witchcraft in those eyes of hers but it looks like she stopped posting on YouTube around 2016 or so. She is still active on Instagram as cecmonster these days if you want to find her there.

I'll probably write up an article about Maker Studios fairly soon as most of the folks on YouTube likely have never even heard of the company or who was involved. But that story is for another day.
